Thompson gives young blood a chance

Last updated : 21 June 2007 By Gary Moss

Position: Goalkeeper

Age:
18

Released From:
Plymouth Argyle

Strengths:
Consistency (Otherwise relatively unknown)

Sandercombe is a fairly consistent and all round strong goalkeeper according to sources from Queens Park Rangers.

He is a good shot stopper and commands his box as well as could be expected for a youngster.

He enjoyed a full season as Under-18's number one at QPR the season before last, in which he produced promising form.

He is yet to prove himself for a senior side, but by all accounts he has the potential to be a consistent stopper if given the chance.

Weaknesses:
Experience

Sandercombe began his career at London club Queens Park Rangers, where he cemented his place as the Under-18's first choice.

Other than this, his experience is next to none having never made a senior

Holloway...Twice let him go
appearance, as you would expect for an 18-year-old. He was released by then Rangers boss Ian Holloway, before being snapped up by Plymouth.

His contract expired this summer and Holloway let him go again.

He had two bites of the cherry with the fiery Championship boss, and on both occasions failed to impress.

He is on a 12-month deal at Meadow Lane, suggesting Thompson too may have his doubts over the youngster.

But, these reservations were not enough to deny him another chance of the big time.

With his track record, he is certainly a risk but considering his age and cost (nothing), he must be worth a punt.

What can he add to the Notts squad?
At this present time, Notts probably offers more to Sandercombe, than he offers to the club, but we all have to start somewhere.

County are offering a young keeper another lifeline in his bid to become a successful professional footballer, based on very little positive evidence.

We can hope that having been given this chance, he will clutch it with both hands and prove a worthwhile addition.

He has a tough task in replacing Saul Deeney, and Pilkington will have to act as a good role model to help him with the step up.

He will automatically come in as number two, which shows Thompson has belief in his ability.

The Mad Verdict:
The young gun will have to be on his guard, as County boss Thompson has shown in the past, he is not afraid to drop first choice stopper KP.

He could be thrown into the deep end at any point over the course of the coming season.

A selection of Notts fans still question Pilkington's credentials, meaning this could prove a big move for the youngster, to eventually oust the current first choice.

In the short-term, it will be a tough at first for him to fill released Saul Denney's boots as a more than able deputy, but over time I expect Sandercombe to better his predecessor.

He will have his eye firmly set on claiming the Magpies number one jersey and a solid first season could pave the way for this.

By bringing Sandercombe to the club at such a young age, it gives Notts the opportunity to mould their own goalkeeper of the future.

Thompson will be hoping to develop a tailor made top draw keeper at Meadow Lane, and he may have found his answer.
