Season goes swimmingly for the Pool

Last updated : 07 June 2007 By Paul Smith

Final position: 2nd

Top goalscorer: Richie Barker (21)

Player of the season: Although Barker finished as joint League Two Golden Boot winner alongside Izale McLeod, nearly half of his goals came before his Januwary move from Mansfield Town.

Konstantopoulos celebrating promotion

Therefore winner of the award is goalkeeper Dimitrios Konstantopoulos. A number of candidates surfaced considering the Pools incredible season.

Andy Monkhouse, Michael Nelson and Richie Humphreys can all feel aggrieved to miss out but the brilliant shot stopping of now Coventry City man Konstantopoulos helps edge it for the Greek.

Playing all of United's league games, Konstantopoulos kept an incredible 25 clean sheets.

Against Notts: Monkhouses' eighth minute goal at Meadow Lane condemned Notts to a 1-0 defeat and was the second game of United's long 21 game unbeaten run.

The return at the Victoria Ground saw Notts dent United's title bid with a 1-1 draw.

Surprisingly Notts dominated for much of the game, despite going behind to a third minute James Brown strike. Andy Parkinson levelled just before the break and Austin McCann missed the chance to give Notts a deserved lead as Konstantopoulos saved his second half spot-kick. In that same incident United's Ben Clark was dismissed with Notts man Stephen Hunt also sent off later in the game.

Wilson delighted by promotion
Defining moment:
Despite being tipped as hot favourites at the beginning of the campaign, new boss Danny Wilson failed to quickly gel his side at the start of the campaign with the Pool largely inconsistent up until November when they were only in mid-table.

A 2-0 home win over high flying Wycombe Wanderers at the end of the month signalled the start of an unbeaten streak that lasted 21 league games.

This run propelled them to the top of the league.

Highlight: Ultimately promotion was the same, so achieving that has to be their number one moment of the season.

Along the way the unbeaten streak was most impressive and fulfilling for all associated with the club as were wins at Swindon and at local rivals Darlington by 3-0.

Lowlight: Missing out on the title on the last day to Walsall.

United appeared to be favourites going into the title run-in. After securing promotion with a few games to spare, Wilson set his sights on the title, particularly with United occupying first place at the time.

However they slipped up immediately after promotion was secured. First they drew with Notts before defeats to Rochdale and Bristol Rovers saw Walsall leapfrog them.

The Mad verdict: Deserving of the title, the Pool played the most impressive football throughout the season.

McCann...missed Notts pen but will have no date with the Pool next year

Wilson, said to be a front runner for the Notts job alongside Steve Thompson in the summer, is well-known for getting his sides to play football and he did that with some of the best players in the division also.

A fantastic defensive record combined with the lethal finishing of Barker and Eifion Williams was too much for several League Two teams.

What's next? League One football means no more League Two business for Wilson's men.
