Experienced Mayo: Useful addition

Last updated : 18 June 2007 By Gary Moss

Name: Paul Mayo

Position:
Defence

Age:
25

Signed From:
Lincoln City

Strengths:
Tackling, blocking and versatility

The 25-year-old former Imp arrives at Meadow Lane with a wealth of defensive experience. During his five year spell at Sincil Bank, the versatile defender has impressed all the way across the back four. He is also capable of filling a gap in the midfield if necessary.

He is a solid League Two defender who will always work his socks off for the side. He is strong in the challenge and never afraid to put himself on the line for the team. He is a committed player and a worthwhile addition to the Notts squad.

Weaknesses:
Marking

For all Mayo's experience, he can be prone to a big error or two over the course of a season. More often than not he is 'Mr Reliable' but on occasions his marking lets him down and poor concentration can be punished by the opposition.

What can he add to the Notts squad?
Paul Mayo is another strong defender to Steve Thompson's tough back line. He is more confide

Mayo...Bolsters Magpies defensive options
nt at full-back but has been employed as a centre half in the past.

Back to back man-of-match performances against Darlington and Bristol Rovers during City's season run in showed his expertise at the heart of the back four.

With the Magpies chasing promotion, this term, Mayo's play-off experience could also be vital. He has been in the play-off's in four out of five seasons running with Lincoln City, but will be hoping to make that step up with Notts this year.

At just twenty-five years of age, he still has the best years ahead of him and there are very few defenders at this level with as much experience.

Mayo enjoyed a season with Watford in the middle of his Lincoln time but it is in fourth tier that he has really built his reputation as a no nonsense player

The Mad Verdict:
Mayo should prove to be a wise signing by Steve Thompson. Although Mayo could struggle to regularly claim a first team shirt, he is valuable squad member for Notts. He will not moan, instead he will work hard and battle for his place.

What Mayo lacks in quality, he makes up for with shear guts and determination. He is the kind of player who will keep those in font of him, on their toes.

Following five successful seasons at Lincoln, he has shown himself to be a loyal and reliable player.

It is believed that Mayo arrives at Meadow Lane after Imps boss John Schofield tried to lower his wages when agreeing a new deal.

A change will do Mayo the world of good and he is a clever addition to County's ever-growing squad.
