Carey contract boost after survival act

Final position: 19th

Top goalscorer: Chris Llewellyn (11)

Williams... captain's role

Player of the Season: As with all clubs who battled relegation, it is difficult to choose a player of the season considering each sides difficulties. The same goes for the Red Dragons. Llewellyn's goals make him a candidate, likewise the exciting Lee McEvilly but captain Danny Williams is the player who has given the most. The long serving midfielder isn't the greatest footballer but he made things tick with his aggression and spirit.

Against Notts: Six points from six for the Magpies. At Meadow Lane in November Andy Parkinson and Jason Lee helped Notts into a 2-0 lead by the hour mark. Llewellyn pulled on back for the visitors but it wasn't enough with Kevin Pilkington making a stunning late stop to thwart the Welsh side.

At the Racecourse, Notts took a late 1-0 win courtesy of Simon Spender's injury time own goal in April.

Defining Moment: Simon Spender's own goal proved to be a blessing in disguise for Carey's men. At the time it looked like being the final nail in the coffin in their struggle to beat the drop, finding themselves in the relegation zone and with games running out.

However, as their fans applauded them off the pitch Wrexham were lifted and trounced playoff chasing Lincoln City 3-0 at Sincil Bank immediately after before wins against Torquay and Shrewsbury made them favourites to stay up. They did.

Highlight: The 3-0 win against the Imps was by far Wrexham's most impressive performance and result of the season. Particularly impressive is the fact it came at a time when they were severely under the cosh and the win was one of the most important in the clubs history.

Lowlight: Losing 5-0 at Accrington Stanley in September. It was their first defeat of the campaign after winning three and drawing three of their first six league games and subsequently sent them on a downward spiral.

The Mad verdict: Staying up was imperative for Wrexham given their fan base, tradition and lack of finances. After surviving administration, the club have been trying to get back on track and relegation would have been too

Carey... passionate about the club
costly, too soon. They may have survived by the skin of their teeth, but in Brian Carey they luck to have secured the future of a bright young manager who cares deeply about the club.

At Meadow Lane Wrexham were unfairly beaten and were one of the better sides seen there this season, playing good attacking football and using wingers effectively.

Somewhere it has gone drastically wrong, but at least they survived.

What's next? Stability is needed. Fans need to be careful about shouting the odds regarding success next season - that is unrealistic.

Carey needs to clear out his squad and find some funds somewhere and Wrexham can look to a campaign of consolidation. That would provide the platform for future promotion.
