Season ratings... The strikers

Last updated : 16 May 2008 By Paul Smith
Lawrie Dudfield

Appearances: 36

Goals: 3
Best moment: Hitting a fine brace to put Notts into round two of the FA Cup, as Histon were put to the sword at Meadow Lane.
Worst moment: His release after a season lacking in goals. Dudfield cut a disconsolate figure when interviewed by team mate Jason Lee on East Midlands Today following the news he wouldn't be retained.
Verdict: Dudfield has sparked arguably the most debate amongst the NCM regulars all season. Those for him claim he is a hard working, intelligent striker who does alot of donkey work. Those against simply say he doesn't score enough goals. Both are valid points and sum up his season. Nowhere near enough goals, but plenty of endeavour and creativity. Ultimately, as a striker, the goals have cost him a contract.
Rating: 5 (out of 10).

Danny Crow

Appearances: 14

Goals: 2
Best moment: Netting the winner on his second debut as Notts picked up a priceless three points at Chester City.
Worst moment: Getting injured on his first debut against Bury back in October. It kept him out for a few months and saw his sharpness deteriorate.
Verdict: Crow's first arrival was seen as Steve Thompson's final throw of the dice, and after looking so promising, Crow's injury saw Notts fall to defeat and Thompson the axe. He returned in February and gave another immediate impact with that Chester winner, but failed ultimately to live up to his reputation. Always looked a threat but appeared to lack a killer instinct and was guilty of missing important chances in games. Some criticised his work rate but he did his bit in keeping the club up.
Rating: 5.

Hector Sam

Appearances: 24

Goals: 2
Best moment: Having his name chanted by Z-blockers for about fifteen constant minutes during the 1-0 Johnstone's Paint Trophy defeat to Orient.
Worst moment: A truly abysmal miss, easily the worst of the season, as Notts drew 1-1 with Morecambe at the start of the season. Unmarked Sam put wide with the goal completely gaping.
Verdict: That Sam was released before the end of the season shows how poor a spell he had with Notts. Signed as Thompson's 'twenty goal man' the Trinidadian could only score twice and missed many more. Tame in front of goal, and generally ineffective, Sam was a poor signing by Thompson.
Rating: 3.

Craig Lindfield

Appearances: 4

Goals: 1
Best moment: His debut goal at Accrington to send Notts on the way to a first away win of the season.
Worst moment: Not being offered another month's loan after the expiry of the first deal.
Verdict: It all started so well for the Liverpool youngster. A truly stunning debut strike, and with it a Man of the Match display had fans purring. But after that he never fired and didn't live up to the expectancy making the decision to send him back to Anfield the correct one. Too lightweight and not involved enough, a subsequent spell at Chester was also unproductive.
Rating: 5.

Jason Lee

Appearances: 33
Goals: 1

Best moment: Dinking a perfect ball over the top for Richard Butcher to net the winning goal against Wycombe, confirming Notts' League Two safety.
Worst moment: Being taken off the coaching staff following the arrival of Ian McParland.
Verdict: After such an immense first season, big things were expected of the captain, but he lost his way following the departure of Thompson as manager. Lee scored just once, a tap in during the 4-2 loss at Rochdale, and struggled for fitness all year. When he was fit his impact was minimal, with referees and ceratinly defenders seemingly much wiser to his tricks rendering him less effective.
Rating: 4.

Ryan Jarvis

Appearances: 17

Goals: 2
Best moment: Scoring the winner in a vital 1-0 home win over Accrington Stanley to put Notts on the road to safety.
Worst moment: Being told by his long-time parent club Norwich that he had no future at Carrow Road.
Verdict: Jarvis deserves a lot of credit for his time at Notts as he joined the battle to keep the Magpies in the Football League. Always a willing worker, Jarvis committed himself to the cause in troubled times. Scored a couple of goals but as a striker renowned for his finishing was expected to get more and will be disappointed that he didn't especially with a few missed opportunities. Played well on the wing also, and may yet sign permanently in the Summer.
Rating: 6.

Spencer Weir-Daley

Appearances: 33

Goals: 3
Best moment: A superb performance at Rotherham earlier in the season when he scored Notts' equaliser and put in a performance of real promise.
Worst moment: Simply not starting enough games. Of his 33 appearances, 21 of them came from the bench.
Verdict: Weir-Daley came with a glowing reputation after a prolific loan spell with League Two nieghbours Lincoln City last term, but his first season has been a disappointment. In a pre-season poll, NCM users voted him to be the leagues top scorer, but the reality couldn't have been starker. Fair enough his chances at times were limited, but he must do more to earn those chances. He scored three times in his 12 starts, one in four, but he missed a hatful of chances in his subs role. More is expected, and he has to deliver.
