Season ratings... The goalkeepers

Last updated : 07 May 2008 By Paul Smith
Kevin Pilkington

Appearances:
35
Clean sheets: 7
Best moment: Being named as the Supporters Club and Players Player of the Year must be close, highlighting his consistency over the season. But how
can you look past that truly wonderous save against Chester at Meadow Lane. World class.
Worst moment: Getting injured ahead of the vital run-in.
Verdict: Pilkington has had his finest season yet in County colours in this, his third year. The former Manchester United youngster has utilised all of his experience to produce a telling contribution that often kept Notts in games they would have lost were it not for him. Didn't start the season all that well, with only one clean sheet in his first 14 games, but grew as it progressed under Ian McParland, making some great saves and being blameless for just about every conceded goal. His performances in goal were the platform for a fine defensive end to the campaign, even though he missed final 14 matches through injury.
Rating: 8 (out of 10).

Russell Hoult

Appearances:
14
Clean sheets: 7
Best moment: Achieving a shut out at high-flying Peterborough United, the divisions top scorers.
Worst moment: Hoult very nearly limped out of the crucial derby with Mansfield before a ball had been kicked, picking up what looked a serious
injury in the warm up. Luckily he made a miraculous recovery, with no sub keeper on the bench.
Verdict: Deserves so much credit for his role in Notts' successful relegation fight. Hoult came from a Championship club on the verge of the Premiership in Stoke City, to help Notts' keeper crisis with Pilkington and understudy Tim Sandercombe injured. Played every minute of every game thereafter, and his clean sheets record speaks for itself. It is obvious he came from a higher level, and his experienced voice pushed Notts to safety. Will be fondly remembered at Notts.
Rating: 8.

Tim Sandercombe

Appearances:
1

Clean Sheets: 0
Best moment: Making his professional debut in the 1-0 first round Johnstone's Paint Trophy defeat to Leyton Orient.
Worst moment: Picking up an injury at the same time as Pilkington, denying him the chance of a Football League debut.
Verdict: Not many Notts fans will know of Sandercombe's abilities, seeing him only in pre-match warm ups. He has even failed to make the bench for much of the season, with McParland preferring to utilise five outfield options there. But he was offered a contract extension by former boss Steve Thompson, so must be showing some promise.
