Match Ratings...vs Lincoln City

Last updated : 14 August 2005 By Rob Davies
As previously stated in the match report, this was by no means a classic display from Notts, but it was one where sheer effort and work rate won the day.

The fact that the table is meaningless at this point of the season does not appear to matter, we are third in the league - and the Notts fans are delighted about it!

Like with Tuesday's win over Wrexham, it's hard to pick major fault with any player. Let's hope it'll continue to be a feature of Thordarson's reign.

(6 Average)

Kevin Pilkington - 6, Has problems with his kicking?! Don't make me laugh! Set up Notts' first goal out of nothing with a gigantic punt upfield that can dis-spell that myth straight-away. Other than that, he was faultless for the Lincoln's goal and he made one decent stop from Asamoah, but was otherwise largely a spectator.

Brian O'Callaghan - 7, He may not strike you immediately as a footballer, but the big man certainly seems to play like one. Has shown definate improvement now his match fitness is what it should be, with his distribution also looking better than in early showings.

Julien Baudet - 8, He may be French, but there is something so very English about the way Baudet plays the game. Uncompromising, solid and tough in the tackle - this was another captain's performance from the big defender. Oh, and his free-kick wasn't bad either.

Kelvin Wilson - 7, Coolness personified when on the ball, Wilson was once again an able deputy to Baudet. The duo are forming one formidable pairing at the heart of the Magpies defence. Was lucky to get away with a petulant stamp in the 90th minute though, but we'll forgive one blemish - after all, he is just 19.

Rob Ullathorne - 7, Once again Mr Consistent barely put a foot wrong, despite being up against the much faster Asamoah. However, Ullathorne managed to use his cunning and vast experience to out-wit the lively forward on a number of occasions. Still found time to give support going forward, too.

David Pipe - 8, Another all-action, high-energy display from Pipe, who is certainly Thordarson's type of player. The Welshman is now looking more like the player that initially arrived here on-loan from Coventry, proving an asset both in defence and going forward. Fast becoming an on-the-field leader.

Steady Eddy: Unsung hero
Lewis McMahon
- 6, Quieter than in mid-week, but McMahon was still scrapping defensively and getting in the positions to do damage going forward. Everything about him suggests he is a real class act at this level.

Mike Edwards
- 8, Star man. The unsung hero in midfield typifies what this Thordarson reign is all about. It should be noted that Edwards is a key reason why he have conceded so few goals thus far, protecting the back four superbly in each of the three games. In this encounter he was also able to bomb forward and played a key part in the build-up to Baudet's winner. Has bounced back well from his terrible injury.

Chris Palmer - 7, Looked better than in mid-week, but still has a tendancy to float in and out of games. Footwork was neat, and he again showed a willingness to get back and defend that was missing all too often last season. A competent display.

Andy White - 6, Often struggled to get involved against the gigantic Lincoln centre half, but he did do extremely well to win the flick-on for the opener. Suddenly has competition for his place in the form of the rejuvinated Gordon.

Steve Scoffham - 8, Has been through a lot in his short professional career, but Scoffham deserves to reep the benefits this year. Has already gone someway to silencing the doubters, with two excellent displays in the past week - capped by claiming the opener against Lincoln. Another hard-working display, where he showed a pleasing willingness to run at defenders.

Subs

Gavin Gordon (White, 61) - 7, Have no fear, big Gav is here! After being omitted from the first two squads of the season, Gordon was recalled against his former club to great success, shunning the tag of 'lazy' once and for all. A vast improved showing on last season.

Stacy Long (Palmer, 68) - 7, Gained himself popularity with the home crowd after netting the winner in mid-week, but this was another pleasing showing from Long. Gave a tireless 25 minutes playing out-of-position, and came close to netting again with a blistering 30-yarder.

Not Used: Deeney, Martin, Hurst.
