Match Ratings vs. Peterborough Utd

Last updated : 27 August 2006 By Rob Davies
A game not for the purists - a further analysis can be found here - this was a match where Notts were able to stand-up to the almighty physical threat of Peterborough, at the expense of good football, in order to earn a deserved point.

A collectively solid performance, just one real effort on target from the Magpies points towards the emphasis on solidarity that was in existence.

All this makes it something of a difficult game to dissect, with few Magpies truly shining in what was a team effort.

(6 Average)

Kevin Pilkington - 6, A spectator for almost the entire game, Pilkington's only real piece of action was diving at the feet of Trevor Benjamin late-on - forcing the striker wide in order to narrow his angle expertly. Dealt with the aerial balls capably.

Dan Gleeson - 7, Despite missing out to Gary Silk in mid-week, Gleeson has already displaced his rival as the club's first choice right back. Continuing to impress, the youngster was a worthy outlet going forward and a sturdy battler at the back. One to watch.

Alan White - 7, Has overcome the jitters of his early Notts career to prove an excellent acquisition. Able to cope with the Bruno-like presence of Benjamin relatively comfortably.

Mike Edwards - 7, Star man. For all of his 14 new signings in this brand new squad, it is arguably one of the few existing squad members who has been the star of the early reign of Steve Thompson. Edwards is now surely in the form of his Notts career, winning his far share of headers even against the most fierce of opponents.

Austin McCann - 7, Like White and Gleeson, McCann is providing a worthwhile contribution to this new backline that has set the foundations for Notts' unbeaten start to the campaign. The Scot has all the components required for a full-back at this level and looks set to star heavilly in the upcoming months.

David Pipe - 6, Arguably one of his quietest games in the past year, Pipe suffered from a lack of the ball down the flanks in this kick-and-run football game. Is sure to bounce back.

Matt Somner - 6, Even the tigerish Somner suffered against Posh's physical nature, visably pulling out of one 50/50 with the giant Guy Branston.

Dan Martin - 7, The pick of Notts' midfielders, Martin is easily the most improved of the Magpies' crop of young players from 12 months ago. Visably stronger, the 19-year-old coped admirably in a swamped midfield area. Currently warranting his place in the team.

Andy Parkinson - 6, Like Pipe, Parkinson was often under-used due to the direct approach of both teams. Did find himself with a half-chance on one occasion, but was looked shy of confidence and was unable to fire a shot at Mark Tyler's Peterborough goal.

Junior Mendes - 7, A lively customer in attack, Mendes' efforts deserved a goal in a game where he could have easily hid. On the few occasions when Notts did play on-the-grass football, the pacy striker was at the heart of it. Saw Notts' best chance well-saved by Tyler.

Jason Lee - 6, An eventful afternoon, Lee proved that he is far better to have amongst your ranks then in the opposition. Elbows are clearly a huge part of his game, but this is already his second game in a County shirt where he was one mis-timed jump away from seeing red. A great outlet.

Subs

Tcham N'Toya (Pipe, 81) - 6, Brought on too late to have any real impact, Thompson's prudent use of his substitutions after the mid-week display surprised many in the stands.

Not Used: Deeney, Hunt, Curtis, Dudfield.
