Match Ratings vs. Oxford Utd

Last updated : 20 March 2006 By Rob Davies
A game reminiscent of many home fixtures in the past two seasons, Notts were unable to find the craft and finishing prowess to overcome a very poor side.

The Magpies did create enough chances to win the game, but were again thwarted by the problem that has plagued them all season.

Remember, from the current squad, centre back Julien Baudet remains the club's top-scorer with six goals.

(6 Average)

Kevin Pilkington - 6, Produced one smart save when faced one-on-one, but was otherwise largely a spectator.

Brian O'Callaghan - 5, Defended solidly, but was often wasteful in possession. Not one of his better days.

Julien Baudet - 5, Looked nervous, even against such a weak opposing strike force. Repeatedly cleared the ball into the stands instead of retaining possession, the question must be raised as to whether the captain is too erratic to be replied upon week-in, week-out.

Mike Edwards - 7, Scooped the sponsors' man of the match award and was easily the pick of the defenders. Looks so much more comfortable in his natural position, Edwards was a rock at defensive set-pieces and a threat at offensive ones.

Rob Ullathorne - 6, Like O'Callaghan on the other flank, Ullathorne could often have used more imagination with the ball at his feet but was on the spot to produce a number of timely interceptions at the back.

David Pipe - 7, Gave what you always seem to get with Pipe - non-stop running for 90 minutes. The midfielder was a great attacking threat, particularly in the first period, and count himself unlucky not to finish on the winning team. Looking increasingly destined for the exit door.

Lee Crooks - 6, Is failing to live-up to his excellent start with the club and was often a peripheral figure at the weekend. Needs to impose himself in games such as these.

Nathan Doyle - 7, Was enjoying an excellent game until being withdrawn through injury shortly before the interval. Probing in possession, the Derby loanee was a huge loss.

Chris Palmer - 7, Star man. The young winger is producing arguably the best sustained run of his Notts County career and was often the Magpies biggest attacking threat. Unlucky not to score with a well-struck left-footed drive. Provided the team's chief supply line, with a number of excellent crosses delivered from the left channel.

Steve Scoffham - 6, Workmanlike in attack but was unable to have any real impact on the opposing defence.

Daniel Chillingworth - 6, Loan striker was unable to continue his recent good form and, like Scoffham, had little impact on the Oxford rearguard.

Subs

Jake Sheridan (Doyle, 44) - 6, Produced a number of lively forays down the right flank but was denied of more opportunity's due to the lack of ball coming down the flank.

Andy White (Ullathorne, 70) - 6, Striker provided a physical presence and was able to win a number of headers, but squandered an excellent chance when he fired an unchallenged volley straight at Billy Turley.

Stacy Long (Palmer, 82) - 6, Youngster will have been disappointed to be overlooked in favour of Sheridan and he was unable to have any real impact in the 10 minutes he was on the field for. Deserves a longer chance.

Not Used: Marshall, Martin.
