Match Ratings- V MK Dons

Last updated : 09 September 2007 By Gary Moss

Kevin Pilkington. STAR MAN. The Notts number one made a string of fine saves in the first half, so much so he kept the Magpies in the game. He again produced good stops after the break and prevented a cricket score. I am

Pilkington...STAR MAN
sure he will be a little disappointed with both second half goals though. Perhaps should have done better; beaten at his near post and missing when coming to claim. But, it would be very harsh to criticise after he kept the Dons at bay for so long. 7

Lee Canoville
. Found out defensively. Terrorised by Lloyd Dyer. His pace was just too much for him. Often caught too far forward and put up little resistance. Won most balls in the air but with the Dons playing most of their football on the floor, he just wasn't up to the job. 4

Adam Tann
. Made some goal saving tackles early on and did deal with most of what was thrown at him. But, he still doesn't look 100% comfortable. Knight's pace caused some problems but he was on top form. 6

Stephen Hunt
. Calm, assured and once again Notts' rock. Good in the air. Read the game well. Limited Gallen to few chances and made sure he played with his back to goal most of the night. So much so, Ince had to change things and bring him off mid-way through the second half. 7

Mayo...Continues to shine
Austin McCann. Fairly solid but relied on Mayo's back-tracking too much. No nonsense but had little chance to get forward. Mayo was by far better. 5

Paul Mayo
. Energetiuc and determined. Never stopped running, up and down all game. Should have levelled just before the break but was unlucky. Some say he was fortunate not to have given away a penalty late on, but it would have been a harsh decision if given. Continues to shine. 7

Jay Smith
. Much better in his preferred central role. Very economical with the ball and played numerous good forward balls. Needs to show more drive however. Shouldn't be afraid to burst into the box more often. Sometimes victim to playing too deep but that was caused by the attack minded Dons. 7

Richard Butcher
. Quiet. This time, no goal to get him out of jail. He is great
at playing sideways passes but gave the ball away cheaply when looking to play forward. Made some tough tackles and if Smith had been more adventurous, he may have been more effective. 5

Andy Parkinson
. Worked hard in the first half but was muscled out of the game far too easily. Wasteful on the ball and didn't warrant his starting shirt at all. Needs to do much more. 4

Dudfield...Frustrating

Lawrie Dudfield
. Worked very hard and showed great movement but no end product. A tireless display but needs to get closer to Lee to have the desired affect His lack of pace and delayed reactions made him frustrating. 6

Jason Lee
. Saw too little of the ball and when he did it was in the air. Fair enough that's when he's at his best but lacked support despite playing with two strike partners. Drifted in and out of the game but as usual won his headers and was strong. 6

Subs:

Spencer Weir-Daley
. (for Parkinson, 58) Bright start but soon faded. Came in during a spell where the Dons were really on top. Couldn't do much to influence the game. 6

Matt Somner
. (For McCann, 80) Did he come on? Never arrived. But, Thommo has to take some of the blame for making his changes late on. N/A

Hector Sam
. (for Dudfield, 84) Buzzed around but by this time the game was dead and buried. N/A

Star Man: Kevin Pilkington
. Ironic perhaps with Notts conceding three goals but it says a lot about the type of game it was. Without Pilko, it could have been many more. Some great saves throughout.
