Match Ratings V Grimsby Town

Last updated : 01 April 2007 By Paul Smith

Kevin Pilkington. Two games back in the side, and two clean sheets. That is the important statistic as Pilkington continues to look back to his best, with an assured performance. One fantastic save in the first half was out of the top drawer. 7

Edwards... Commanding as ever

David Pipe. Rarely involved Pipe dealt with Notts target Ciaran Toner well but didn't feature too heavily on the ball. Showed a few glimpses of class but they were all too infrequent as the fans favourite was on the periphery of the game. 6

Austin McCann. Didn't put a foot wrong and gave the type of performance Notts fans expect of him after his good start to the season. Better in possession and solid at the back, if only he didn't try the long ball as much. 7

Mike Edwards. Extremely commanding performance against his former club, Edwards kept tabs on the Mariners frontline with ease. Headed everything and looked every inch the player Grimsby wished had never left. 8

Stephen Hunt. The youngster can do no wrong as he continues to give solid performances week in week out. Never did anything poorly and even released Notts onto the attack with some intelligent balls. 8

Ross... So that is what he looks like
Ian Ross. Not the playmaker he is cracked up to be, Ross was lightweight in possession, and unable to get a grip on proceedings. His set-pieces were particularly poor, and he looked as though he didn't want to be there. 4

Matt Somner. Toiled hard and was given a good ovation from the fans for his tireless performance. Did the dirty work in midfield and held his position well. Won the battle of the battlers in midfield against Paul Bolland. 7

Jay Smith. Anonymous in the first period, Smith hardly touched the ball. However, a kick up the backside from his boss at half-time saw him feature more with some good running from midfield and a cleverly taken goal. Also gave the pass of the game when he released Dudfield for a clear chance. 6

Tcham N'Toya. After the high of scoring the winner last week, and a new lease of life at the club, N'Toya may have wasted that with a dire first half. Clueless in possession at times, the Congolese front man weakly attempted two early efforts and was subbed at the break. 3

Jason Lee. Not his greatest game, but how he battled. His direct opponent Justin Whittle shared a gigantic tussle where Lee gave as good as he got. However, some of his finishing was particularly poor and he got yet another late booking. 6

Lawrie Dudfield. Good on the ball, Dudfield gave some clever touches and skilfully worked the channels well. He looked a constant threat but as with Lee the finishing let him down, particularly when one-on-one. 7

Subs:

Stephen Hunt

Andy Parkinson (for N'Toya '45) Could be argued he changed the game, his impact that good against his former club. Great willingness and very sharp, he brilliantly set Smith up for the decisive second goal. 8

Gary Silk (for Somner '68) Put himself about but didn't get too involved. Did a job to see out the win. 6

James Walker (for Dudfield '85) Though he was given little time, the loanee looked sharp. Won a couple of free-kicks and was pacey and clever on the ball. 6
