Match Ratings v Darlington...Part One

Last updated : 13 February 2008 By Gary Moss

Kevin Pilkington. Fine stop early on, off his line quickly to deny Darlo's Tommy Wright. Had no chance for the goal and made a good second half save to round off another good display. Kicking was strong yet again. Little he could have done better in a game where chances were few and far between. 7

Lee Canoville.
One of the players who kept fighting until the bitter end. Worked hard, tried to get forward although lacked a final ball. Rob Purdie

Edwards...Return taking its toll
may have got the better of him over the night but he was marking a very good player to his credit. A fighter nonetheless as the Notts ship sank. 6

Mike Edwards.
Shaky at the back. Not his usual self by a long shot. Caught ball matching too often and his clearances were well below par. A long way to go until back to his very best. His return to the side may be beginning to take its toll. 5

Adam Tann.
He was a rock at the back for the Magpies tonight. A real captain's performance. The defender put himself about and barely put a foot wrong all evening. Led the defence well and was always talking to those around him, proving he is an excellent signing by the club. Superb. 8

Stephen Hunt.
Struggled early on with the pace of Julian Joachim. He did settle as the game went on and delivered pinpoint cross to Jarvis who was unlucky not to score. He should have done better to clear ball when Ricky Ravenhill hit home the Darlo opener. Subbed at the break with a groin injury, a disappointing night all in all. 5

Ali Gibb.
Not a great showing for the winger. Supported Canoville well defensively but never got forward as he should have. Passing was very poor and looks out of position playing up the pitch. Added very little to the game. 4

Bucther...Still out wide

Gavin Strachan.
Efficient. Stuck to his task well with some usual neat touches. Always looking to spread the game wide with a clever range of passing. Outing cut short early in second period due to a hamstring injury. 6

Jay Smith.
Very quiet. Looked to create when he got the ball but needs to offer himself more. Second half was no better. He will have to do more to show he is up for the fight. 6

Richard Butcher.
Still not in his preferred role and he is wasted out wide. Saying that, Butch again was reliable with his set-piece delivery. Industrious as always and his passing was fairly accurate but needed to take the game by the scruff a bit more. 6

Jason Lee.
Always dangerous. Hit the post and caused problems for the Darlo back line especially early on. As the game progressed, central defence partners Alan White and Stephen Foster wised up to his threat and marked him out of the game. If Lee was to get some variance in his supply we may see him have more impact. It is difficult to judge with balls being constantly pumped up to the striker. 6

Lee...A danger

Ryan Jarvis.
Showed touches of class but needs more fight. Good chance to give Notts the lead and forced a fine save from header. Quiet in the second half and may need his opening goal before he grows in confidence. 6

Subs

Austin McCann (for Stephen Hunt, 45).
Solid display from McCann. Defended resolutely but perhaps could have got forward more. Looks more natural at left-back than Hunt. 6

Myles Weston (for Gavin Strachan, 50).
A sign of creation from the young winger. Willing to take on his man and try and claw Notts back into the game. Ran at the Quakers and showed the most promising of signs of getting the Magpies back into the game. 7

Spencer Weir-Daley (for Ali Gibb, 75).
Perhaps brought on too late to show what he can really do. Pushed out wide and found it difficult to find a foot hold in the match. Made some mazy runs but surely must be given a bigger chance in the side before being judged. 6
