Match ratings v Chester... Including Myles Weston... 8

Last updated : 16 February 2008 By Paul Smith

Average - 6

Kevin Pilkington. A good clean sheet for Pilkington who dealt with everything that came his way. Wasn't overly exerted and will have tougher days, but claimed a lot of aerial ball and commanded well meaning Chester never looked like scoring. 8

Lee Canoville. Didn't get forward as much as he should have and seemed happy to defend first and think about attacking soon after. Perhaps a little nervy at times up against the industrious Lawrie Wilson, but dug in. 6

Adam Tann. As committed as ever, Tann came up with another no-nonsense showing in which he fought for every ball and won most. His task

Mayo... Good return
was always going to be tough up against the physical John Murphy, but he dealt with Chester's biggest threat comfortably. 7

Mike Edwards. An in and out showing from Edwards who was more inconsistent than he usually is. Made a ridiculous back pass to Pilkington that nearly resulted in a shocking own goal, but saved Notts at the death with a goal saving header. 6

Paul Mayo. Back in the starting eleven for the first time since the Havant and Waterlooville shocker, Mayo returned with a good display, looking comfortable and like he'd never been away. Clearly confident after a good loan spell at Darlington, Mayo defended well but set-pieces weren't always great. 7

Ali Gibb. Much criticised in midweek after an inept display in the 1-0 defeat to Darlington, Gibb proved his doubters wrong with the vital assist for Notts' winner. A fine cross it was, and Gibb worked hard throughout. Could do with getting more balls into the box than he does, because he can clearly whip one in. 7

Jay Smith. Didn't stamp his authority in the middle like he can do, and still looks a way off his best. Not a bad showing, but his first touch still needs some work, but that will only come with starts. His passing wasn't great but he always looked to involve himself. 6

Weston... Exciting
Richard Butcher. Nearly notched an incredible eleventh of the season from midfield, but was denied by a fortuitous save from John Danby. Looked happier in the centre and began to roam a little bit which was effective. However is passing wasn't always the best and he lost possession a little too easily. 6

Myles Weston. Looked very dangerous all game and was rightfully restored because he can do damage to the full back. James Vaughan will be delighted to see the back of him as he terrorised the full-back plenty of times, particularly in the first half. That said, his final ball still needs working on, although one cross provided Danny Crow with a great chance. 8

Ryan Jarvis. Another new partner for the Norwich City loanee to start with up top, and he linked up OK with Crow. That said, he wasn't as threatening as Crow, and should have scored with a snapshot. 6

Danny Crow. STAR MAN. Even had he performed terribly but hit the games only goal he would have this accolade purely because he is a striker, he scored, and he won Notts the game. He was also one of the brightest players on the pitch aside. A fantastic header that proves his reputation as a clinical

Crow... Matchwinner
finisher, and his movement all game was a joy to watch. Missed a decent chance in the opening half, but was never going to miss a second. 8

Subs

Jason Lee (for Crow, 75). Added height and muscle to the attack, and defended back well from set pieces. 6

Gary Silk (for Smith, 82). Competed. 6

Spencer Weir-Daley (for Jarvis, 85). Not enough time. N/A
