Match ratings v Bradford... Including Russell Hoult... 6

Average - 6

Russell Hoult. Can he be blamed for the defeat? No he cannot. Could he have done better with any of the goals? Debatable - but probably not. He
Hoult... Average debut
was fairly passive and hardly used, yet three goals conceded illustrates he didn't inspire as much confidence as Kevin Pilkington may have. Two decent saves - but he needs to get used to his team mates quickly. 6

Lee Canoville. The left-hand side of Bradford caused Notts plenty of problems in the second half, and that is where all three goals came from. Therefore as the right back, Canoville was out of position and not commanding enough, too often. 5

Adam Tann. Has been so good recently, but today he was beaten by Peter Thorne far too easily. His lapse in concentration was the mistake that allowed Thorne to equalise - and it went downhill from there. Didn't inspire or rally the troops. As captain, he needs to do that. 5

Mike Edwards. A couple of rash clearances and headers that showed Edwards is still not at his best, but his efforts were commendable. The thing about last season's player of the year is that when he isn't at his best he still never makes a big mistake. That is the mark of a good defender. 6

Paul Mayo. Poor all afternoon. His long throws were his only joy as he opened up Bradford with a couple of attempts early on. But on the ball he was poor, and he sliced his clearance that led to City taking the lead. After just 180 minutes back starting, his place is under threat again. 4

Ali Gibb. Very involved early on, Gibb started confidently and put in two or three really testing crosses for City's experienced defence to deal with. Faded as the game wore on, but worked hard. Unfortunate that his attempt to clear the danger led to a fortuitous City second, but should have covered better for their third. 6

Richard Butcher. Tried his best to boss the midfield, but didn't always stamp his authority. Was named as the sponsors' man of the match, but he

wasn't quite that good this week. Did two or three bits of really classy stuff in the middle by beating his marker and playing the simple ball, and worked the opening for Notts' goal brilliantly, but must involve himself more. 7

Jay Smith.
His best game since returning from his long-term injury. Smith tackled and hussled all game and was clearly up for the midfield scrap. Sometimes he was a bit rash, but he won plenty of possession. Nearly opened the scoring with a cracking effort early on. Could do better with his passing, but a great effort. 7.5

Myles Weston.
Can be summed up with a different rating for each half. In the first he was a definite eight, the second a poor five. That is the inconsistency that has nulified his impact this season, as Weston has struggled to always show his potential. He was doing so in the first half, absolutely taking Ben Starosta to the cleaners, linking up well and working hard, but after the break he wasted possession all the time. Must work on his crossing. 7

Danny Crow.
A good first half where Crow showed moments of class with the ball at his feet. Linked up neatly with Ryan Jarvis and Weston, and worked the ball well. Put in a good shift, but seemed to tire in the second half and didn't get a clear cut chance. 7

Ryan Jarvis.
STAR MAN. Jarvis not only opened his account with a fine finish to temporarily put Notts ahead, but he ran the line superbly all afternoon and worked his socks off. The on-loan Norwich man fought for every ball, showed some fine touches and scored the goal that seemed to have Notts heading for a deserved three points. His best showing yet, and in this performance, he is a good asset. 8

Subs

Neil MacKenzie (for Gibb, 79).
Didn't hardly figure and seemed to want too many touches on the ball, so long it has been since he figured. Should have been introduced much sooner. 5

Spencer Weir-Daley (for Weston, 84).
Once again was given under ten minutes to show his capabilities and got himself into one good position. But he should have scored from it as he hit straight at the keeper meaning there was no grandstand finish. 5

Gary Silk (for Canoville, 89).
