Who Are Ya?

Morecambe were the dark horses of the Conference last season earning promotion to the Football League via the play-off's.

Consistency was the key to the Shrimps mounting their promotion bid.

Eleven home wins and twelve on their travels put them in line for a solid campaign.

They finished third in the table but a massive fourteen points adrift of runaway leaders Dagenham.

They were defnsively sound boasting the second meanest back four in the league conceding just 46 in the same number of games.

The men from Christie Park flirted with the play-offs all season but an end of season run where they lost once in their final eleven games, sealed their third placed finish.

Morecambe may never have blown the league away but at Wembley they stepped up to the plate to overcome fifth placed Exeter City 2-1.
Carlton...Play off hero left for Carlisle

The Shrimps came from behind to beat City for the first time in nine attempts.

Danny Carlton was the eventual cup final hero netting the promotion winner latching onto to a long ball that beat the Exeter offside trap eight minutes from time.

It was jubilation for Morecambe's travelling fans who were out numbered 3:1 by the Grecians.

As the new season dawns, it is the loss of striker Carlton that will cause the most concern.

The 25-year-old front man signed for Carlisle United this summer and the Shrimps really will miss his goals.

He scored 59 in 180 games at Christie Park but deserves his high profile move.

He has been replaced by former Blackpool man Matty Blinkhorn.

The 22-year-old has signed a two-year deal at Christie Park after being deemed surplus to requirements at the Championship club.
McIlroy...Last of the 'Busby Babes' in charge at Morecambe

He scored 8 goals in 12 loan appearances last season and more of the same will be welcomed to give them any chance of survival.

Beating the drop would be a success story in itself for the Football Leagues newest members but it is a dream their fans think is capable with their neat and tidy squad.

Shrimps boss Sammy McIlroy is a former Manchester United and Northern Ireland footballer.

He was at United between 1971 and 82 where he notched up nearly 350 appearances before leaving for Stoke City.

He has a tough test ahead to steer Morecambe clear of the League Two trap door but the former Northern Ireland coach certainly has the credentials after bringing silverware in last season.
