Who are ya?

It was ultimately a lack of goals that cost Chesterfield their place in League One last season.

The Blues scored just 45 goals all season, and as a result face at least one campaign in the fourth tier.

Defensively they were pretty sound all year round shedding just 53 goals, bettered by only one team in the bottom of the half division. The Spireites lack of fire power didn't go unpunished as they were defeated 1-0 on eleven occasions over the course of the season.

Week after week they were tight at the back but missed chance after chance. Their opponents on numerous occasions would muster up one chance and it would be enough to claim the three points.

Away from home was a massive problem too. They won just three games on their travels and only once after September. Scoring a mere 16 goals away from the Recreation Ground made them the worst travellers in the league.

They finished twenty-finished on 47 points, four points adrift of survival.

Although, they might not be relishing life in League Two, they will be welcomed by others as another Midlands club is added to the battle in the fourth tier.

The Chesterfield fans can look forward to countless local derbies with fourteen clubs in the division within 90 miles of the Recreation Ground, they

Lester...Exciting signing
will be in store for a good away following.

They will be a strong outfit in the league that is for sure. Their stern defensive record should set them up well for a solid season this time around.

Having strengthened up front with the signings of Jack Lester from Nottingham Forest and Steve Fletcher from Bournemouth, the club are confident of bouncing straight back up.

These two high profile signings more than make up for the departure of last seasons top scorer Caleb Folan, who has signed from Premiership side Wigan for a fee of £500,000.

Folan netted eight times last season and his fine performances have earned him a permanant move to the JJB. He will definitely be missed but I'm sure everyone wishes him the best.

Mark Allott and Collin Larkin are the other main players to move on, joining Oldham and Northampton respectively.

The arrival of Lester, 31, has caused the most excitement amongst the Blues fans as he scored 35 goals in two stints at the City Ground at a significantly higher level than he will be playing next season.

He has already been touted as a possible 20-goal-a-season striker who could spearhead Chesterfields return to League One.

And the experienced Fletcher, 35, should prove a perfect partner for the former Forest man having enjoyed eight successful seasons with Bournemouth.

The Spireites are still looking to add one or two more signings to their ranks after being snubbed by now Notts man Neil Mackenzie.

The midfielder opted for a deal at Meadow Lane as the Magpies offered better wages. The Blues are expected to add at least one more middle man before the start of the season.

Chesterfield's promotion push could be determined on whether they manage tio bring someone in to fill departing Allott's boots.

Hibbard...Chairman willing to walk

Despite relegation last season, all is not gloomy at the Recreation Ground.
Their solid side makes them one of the favourites for the title while Chairman Barrie Hubbard doesn't lack any ambition for the clubs future.

He is already willing to hand over ownership of the club to a potential takeover bid.

He has put his heart and soul into the club but is more than happy to walk away from that if it is for the good of the club.

With the potential takeover looking to invest into the side, it will give Chesterfield funds to spend as well as a likely ground move worth an estimated £3.5 million.

With a stadium proposed at Whittington Moor as well as better training facilities, it is believed that the Blues could be playing Championship football within the next five years if the rumoured takeover materialises.

With finances alreadt stable at the club and a half decent side instaled, Chesterfield is quite a catch for investors.

Hubbard has said he will walk away if the right offer comes in and it allows the club to push forward, depsite all his work. He will have left a fine legacy and a good platform to build on.

The first task however remains on the field as they set their eyes on automatic promotion. The Blues should be one of the division major players this season and will fancy themselves for a top three finish.

They will be hard to break down and with fresh faces up top, shouldn't be short of a goal or two.

All looks in place for a successful season but the question lies whether they can cope with the fans enormous expectation.
