Opening day delight?

With the first game of the 2009/10 season against Bradford City now looming large, NCM looks at the past ten opening days of the season for Notts and the delight (by that, we mean misery) that they have brought.

7th August 1999 - Notts County 0-0 Luton Town - Nationwide Division Two

An uneventful 0-0 draw for the Magpies at the starting of 1999/00 against Luton Town at Meadow Lane. The Magpies go on to finish 8th despite a promising start after the title winning season the year before, whilst Luton end up 13th.

Notts - Ward, Holmes, Warren, Redmile (Bolland), Liburd (Robson), Blackmore, Ramage, Richardson, Murray, Beadle, Stallard (Darby)

12th August 2000 - Luton Town 0-1 Notts County - Nationwide Division Two

For the second straight season, Notts kick off the season against Luton Town, this time at Kenilworth Road. It turns out to be the only opening day win for the Magpies in the past decade as a 24th minute Mark Stallard goal gives the Magpies victory. Notts once again narrowly miss out on the play-offs, finishing 8th, whilst this time Luton Town are relegated to Division Three.

Notts - Ward, Warren, Redmile, McDermott, Hughes, Ramage, Stallard, Joseph, Dyer, Owers, Liburd (Holmes)

11th August 2001 - Port Vale 4-2 Notts County - Nationwide Division Two

A thrilling opening day clash at Vale Park in 2001, but unfortunately a six-goal thriller went the way of the Valiants. Stephen McPhee gave the hosts the lead, but Marcel Cas levelled soon after for Notts. Irishman George O'Callaghan again gave Vale the lead, but this time Danny Allsopp equalised, before O'Callaghan and Ashley Dodd went on to seal the victory for the hosts. County go on to narrowly avoid relegation in 19th whilst Port Vale end up 14th.

Notts - Mildenhall, Owers, Fenton, Wilkie, Ireland (Warren), Baraclough, Cas, Caskey, Nicholson (Liburd), Stallard, Allsopp

10th August 2002 - Notts County 1-1 Wycombe Wanderers - Nationwide Division Two

It was opening day disappointment for Notts in 2002 as an injury time goal denied them victory over Wycombe. Marcel Cas had given Notts the lead on the hour mark, but Craig Faulconbridge scored an equaliser with seconds to spare for the chairboys. Notts go on to finish 15th, with Wycombe slightly lower in 18th.

Notts - Garden, Fenton, Baraclough, Ireland, Nicholson, Cas, Caskey, Bolland, Stone, Stallard, Allsopp

9th August 2003 - Bristol City 5-0 Notts County - Nationwide Division Two

It was a miserable start to the campaign for Notts in 2003 as they were demolished by Bristol City in the baking Ashton Gate sun. Lee Peacock struck twice for the Robins before Lee Miller added a third just after half-time. Lee Matthews went on to get a brace to complete the rout. Notts went on to be relegated in 23rd, whilst Bristol City finished 3rd before bottling it in the play-offs.

Notts - Garden, Jenkins, Fenton, Barras, Nicholson, Bolland (Francis), Brough, Richardson, Baraclough, Platt (Hackworth), Stallard (Heffernan)

7th August 2004 - Notts County 1-1 Chester City - Coca-Cola League Two

Another late goal denied Notts an opening day Meadow Lane win against Football League new boys Chester City in Notts' first game back in the fourth tier. Julien Baudet confident struck home a penalty to seemingly give Notts the win, but Daryl Clare struck with two minutes left after Steve Mildenhall dropped a corner. Notts go on to finish 19th, one place above Chester.

Notts - Mildenhall, Richardson, Whitlow, Baudet, Ullathorne, Pipe, Bolland, Edwards, Gill, Gordon, Hurst (Harrad)

6th August 2005 - Torquay United 0-0 Notts County - Coca-Cola League Two

Gudjon Thordarson's first game as Magpies manager was a fairly uneventful goalless draw on the South Coast. A healthy away following saw Torquay's Tony Bedeau get sent off late on for a poor challenge on Steve Scoffham. Notts go on to complete a last day survival act, finishing one place below Torquay who had managed an even more miraculous revival.

Pilkington, O'Callaghan (Sheridan), Baudet, Wilson, Martin (Ullathorne), Pipe, Edwards, McMahon, Palmer, Hurst (White), Scoffham

5th August 2006 - Lincoln City 1-1 Notts County - Coca-Cola League Two

It was Steve Thompson this time who took charge of his first Magpies' game, a local derby at Sincil Bank against Lincoln City. The Magpies fell behind early with Adie Moses bundling the ball over the line, but an inswinging Ian Ross free-kick was diverted past his own 'keeper by Jeff Hughes to give Notts a share of the spoils. Notts go on to finish 13th and Lincoln 5th.

Notts - Pilkington, Pipe, Edwards, White, McCann, Silk, Ross (Curtis), Somner, Parkinson, Dudfield (Mendes), Lee (N'Toya)

11th August 2007 - Grimsby Town 1-1 Notts County - Coca-Cola League Two

A fourth consecutive opening day draw for Notts, who took home a point from Blundell Park. The Mariners took the lead as young defender Ryan Bennett headed home his first goal for the club, but a deflected long rang strike from Neil MacKenzie after half an hour ensured a point for the visitors. Notts end up narrowly avoiding relegation in 21st, whilst Grimsby Town finish 16th.

Notts - Pilkington, Silk, Hunt, Canoville, Mayo, Butcher (Smith), Somner, MacKenzie, Parkinson (Weir-Daley), Lee, Dudfield (Sam)

9th August 2008 - Bradford City 2-1 Notts County - Coca-Cola League Two

Notts' only opening day defeat since relegation to the fourth tier came last season at title favourites Bradford City. Peter Thorne grabbed a brace for Bradford City, continuing his amazing run of goals against Notts, with Richard Butcher making things interesting by pulling one back for Notts. The Magpies go on to finish 19th and Bradford 9th.

Notts - Pilkington, Beardsley, Edwards, Johnson, Mayo, Hamshaw, Nowland, Butcher, Weston, Forrester, Facey (Canham)
