Living in the past!

Meadow Lane will be the venue as Notts host the Reds on Monday 30 July.

Although it isn't a competitive fixture, both sides will treat it as such given meetings have been few and far between in recent times.

It may also be Notts' only home friendly and so a large attendance is expected, even more so considering both will want to put behind them a difficult time last season as they both prepare to target promotion.

In total the sides have met 139 times, with 52 Forest wins, 45 Notts victories and 42 draws. An average of 1.32 goals have occurred per game.

County Cup clashes aside they haven't met since February 1994, which is where NCM begin their rundown of famous competitive games between the sides.

Notts 2-1 Forest

February 12 1994.

Notts took the lead in front of a packed crowd of 18,655 as prolific Scotsman Gary McSwegan latched onto a ball in the box and shifted his way past Colin Cooper and Steve Chettle before rifling home past Mark Crossley on 55 minutes.

Dave Phillips taps in a late 85th minute equaliser for the red half of the City only for Notts right-back, Charlie Palmer of all people, to rise highest in the box and head home a Mark Draper free-kick to the sheer delight of the Notts faithful.

The sour faced Forest fans left the ground bewildered but it was no more than Notts deserved.

A book has since been released as a celebration of that day with Palmer earning a knighthood from Notts fans. Forest have since accused Notts of living in the past… two European Cups anyone?

Forest 1-0 Notts

October 30, 1993.

Notts' win on what has since been heralded 'Sir Charlie Palmer day' was revenge for an early season loss at the City Ground.

Richard Walker fails to stop Stan Collymore

Stan Collymore bagged the only goal of the game in front of a near capacity 26, 721.

A third game actually took place between the sides that year as they met in the Anglo Italian Cup qualifying group stage in September. At the City Ground in front of an impressive 7, 437, the game finished 1-1, Gary Lund scoring for Notts, with the Magpies eventually finishing runners-up in the tournament losing to Brescia in the final.

Forest went on to reach the Premiership that season by virtue of second place finish behind Crystal Palace. Notts finished eighth missing out on the playoffs by just three points in what had been a fine season at Meadow Lane.

A year later Notts were relegated finishing 24th and remarkably have never returned to Championship level since, pummelling down the leagues into the bottom division just two season later.

Forest went from strength to strength finishing an incredible third behind only Manchester United and Blackburn Rovers in their first season back in the top flight. European football beckoned once again for Frank Clarke's men.

Notable players in these games included? Gary McSwegan, Charlie Palmer, Peter Reid, Paul Devlin, Mark Draper (Notts) Stuart Pearce, Steve Chettle, Stan Collymore, Lars Bohinen (Forest)

Forest 1-1 Notts

January 11 1992

The last time the sides met in the top flight of English football came at the City Ground in the year before the lucrative Premiership was born.

Defender Richard Dryden bagged a header for Notts who had been defeated 4-0 by the Reds on the third day of the campaign.

Notts were subsequently relegated that year with Forest a healthily placed eighth.

Elsewhere

In the 1983/84 season Forest won 3-1 at the City Ground, in the old Division One, as a Trevor Christie penalty was just a consolation for Notts. Later in the season in front of over 18,00 the teams played out a 0-0 draw at Meadow Lane.

A season earlier honours were even with a home win apiece.

In December at Meadow Lane Paul Hooks, Iain McCulloch and Christie were on target for the Magpies in a thrilling 3-2 win.

23,552 saw the action packed game that helped Notts to a mid-table finish under Jimmy Sirrel.

Viv Anderson bagged for Notts in vital Magpies win

Forest ended the campaign in fifth, and sought revenge in April winning 2-1 at the City Ground. The only Notts goal was scored by a little remembered player called Aki Latinen.

The 70s were a hotbed for derbies between the then even fiercer rivals.

Forest's best result was a 4-0 win in the League Cup campaign of 1977/78.

Notts' most famous result in that time came with a 2-1 away win in the 1976/77 season courtesy of a Viv Anderson own goal and Steve Carter penalty in front of over 30,000 at the City Ground.

Notts finished eighth in the old Division Two that year, but Forest still had the last laugh, finishing third and going up. The sides drew at Meadow Lane.
