Opposition's View - Macclesfield Town

Last updated : 14 August 2009 By Jacob Daniel
It's time for another one of our 'opposition's view' features ahead of Saturday's first away day of the season, at Macclesfield Town. The Silkmen got a credible 0-0 draw at Northampton Town on the first day of the season, and we catch up with Macc fan Silkyman about Macc, Notts and Wayne Rooney's brother.

1. A 0-0 draw at Northampton in your first game, good performance and result?

It was a really good performance. It says it all that before the game the fans were all pretty convinced that we were in for a 3-0 or 4-0 drubbing before the game and walked away feeling disappointed that we hadn't won the game.

2. There's been a lot of comings and goings during the summer, do you think Alexander has improved the side from last year?

I've thought all summer that we've improved across the board. Through no fault of their own, we had far too many young players playing too many games last season. You always want a dusting of young players to help them develop, but our back five spent most of the season with three youngsters and on a couple of occasions we had four players with barely any experience and other teenagers in the side. Players like Paul Bolland add a lot of experience, and we look a more solid unit because of it.

3. Which player should we be watching out for on Saturday?

John Rooney is Wayne's brother and you can see the similarities in the style of play. John has got a great footballing brain and is very creative, you only need to look at his 65 yard shot against Northampton to see that. He is going to be a key player all season, but Colin Daniel has been a revelation since returning after a loan spell. Pace, trickery and strength!

4. Keith Alexander got plenty of stick last season, is he the right man for the job?

I think so. Last season was horrible, but you couldn't name a manager with a better track record at this level whilst working on a budget than Keith Alexander. Throw in the new style of football that we are playing this year and even his harshest critics of last season will be starting to soften.

5. Anyone you're particularly worried about on the Notts side?

Lee Hughes is the obvious choice after scoring a hat-trick!

6. How do you think the season's going to pan out for both Macc and Notts?

We'll do better than the pundits seem to think (as we always do) and I am confident we can be looking at a top half finish this season. If one of our strikers can find real form then we COULD finish higher than that.

Notts will find it hard to win the League because even with money and top players this is a very hard division. You only have to look at pre-administration Darlington or Bradford to see how difficult it can be. But Notts will know that already so will be able to use their League Two experience in their favour.

7. Thanks Silkyman, finally a prediction for the game?

I think we might surprise a few people this season and I always predict a Macc win, so 2-1 Macc.
