Opposition's View - Chesterfield

Last updated : 18 August 2009 By Jacob Daniel
Once again it's time for an opposition's view on NCM and this time we catch up with Chesterfield fan Matt B and have a chat about Jack Lester, Saltergate and why Notts will get promoted.

1. One win and one loss for the Spireites so far, pleased with your start?

Very pleased, the loss against Torquay was pretty unlucky, with most of the stats favouring us, but a good performance anyway. The win over Northampton was encouraging, we dominated the first 45 minutes and was unlucky not to go in at least 2-0 up. We appeared to be tiring in the second half, which was understandable but we can't afford to do it against Notts. We have started the season with some difficult fixtures, but I'm confident we can cope.

2. We predicted you as the title winners, is that a bit over ambitious?

I think it's fair to say that is over ambitious, it's Sheridan's first season and I know quite a few Spireites are giving him time to sort us out. Our first 11 looks mean, with a fantastic GK, a steady back four with Breckin still being a class above. The midfield I am very happy with, Allot who likes to play things simple but is not afraid to try a killer ball, and Niven. Niven has an immense tackle but has little ball control, will run all day too. Our wingers have pace and skill and finally Jack Lester. A hard working team, with a few bits of flair and class.

3. What did you make of Notts' attempts to lure Jack Lester to Meadow Lane?

I was worried, for a long time Lester said nothing and all I was hearing was how much Lester wants to play for Notts, then there was one night I couldn't sleep as I was told the deal would be complete the morning after. The money you offered was ridiculous and we was never going to agree on a deal, you don't seem to be wasting money on players and the money we want is far more than anyone is willing to pay for a 33 yo, in League 2, I would imagine. Thanks for getting Hughes instead!

4. You're leaving Saltergate at the end of the season, excited or disappointed?

I'm dissapointed, Saltergate has it all. The standing is what I'll miss most of all! But you can't forget it's falling to bits, the facilities are awful, the wooden planks called the Main stand. The clock that nobody can see because the sun is shining on it, the 100 metre track at the side of the pitch and no roof on the away stand! '2-0! And your getting wet!', What is not to love about Saltergate? Although we need to move on if we want to progress.

5. Who is the man to watch on your side for Wednesday evening?

We all know what Jack Lester can do, but there is one player who I'm certain will impress yet again. Donal McDermott. The phrase 'worth the admission fee alone' has been thrown around by alot of our supporters, and it's true. He has so much skill, and can easily beat two or three men at any one time, a winger with a final product also is something we have needed for a while. He is only here for 3 months at the moment, that makes me sad.

6. What do you see the season holding for both Notts and Chesterfield?

Notts will certainly get promotion, most likely win the League, not much discussion in that. Chesterfield can get the playoffs, Sheridan still wants a few more players and we could have another striker before our game, Ashley Chambers from Leicester is what most are saying. Keep Donal McDermott for the season and we might even get automatics, can't see it though.

7. Thanks Matt, enjoy the game. Finally, a score prediction?

I've gone for 1-1, with neither Lester or Hughes scoring. If one team will win it, that will be County. Looking forward to it though! Good luck.
