Top goalscorer is a new role for Jason

Last updated : 13 June 2007 By Paul Smith
Appearances: 41

Goals: 16

Season highlight: Ending the season as the top goalscorer with fifteen in the league.

This tally was also good enough for him to finish as the ninth top scorer in the division.

Mainly scoring with his head, Lee wasn't expected to be the chief scorer in the Notts ranks considering he had made double figures only three times before in his long career.

Surprising it may be but Lee was worth his weight in goals for the Magpies and will be delighted with his tally.

Season lowlight: Incredibly picking up more bookings than goals with a total of eighteen yellow cards.

Statistically the former Nottingham Forest man was the dirtiest player stretched across all the English leagues and despite having no red cards missed nearly ten games through suspension.

It is fair to say though that he was at times treated harshly by referees.

Best game:
There are plenty to choose from in what has been a great first season at the club for the experienced Lee.

He picked up several NCM man of the match awads in the match ratings, particularly in the first half of the campaign.

However, perhaps his best game came when he returned to York Street to face his former employers Boston United in November.

In a highly entertaining 3-3 draw Lee scored twice and created another for Alan White.

Leading the line by example Lee gave the Pilgrims' defence endless problems.

After the game NCM wrote: "Magnificent. Two goals, one assist, a booking, and plenty of bumps and bruises I'm sure. Lee was a hero out there today, and caused much damage and confusion in the Boston rearguard."

He got a 9/10 and was easily awarded man of the match.

The Mad view: Many fans were cynical when Lee arrived considering he was given a two year deal and was entering the very late stages of his career.

Add to the fact he had a long association with fierce rivals Nottingham Forest and some Notts supporters were bitterly disappointed Steve Thompson had swooped for old 'pineapple head'.

However, the fact he became captain and also picked up the players player of the season award and was top goalscorer, meant those fans were forced to eat their words.

Lee was simply awesome at times, working hard and leading the line as a senior professional should.

After the recent disastrous attempts of supposed target men such as Gavin Gordon, Mickael Antoine-Curier and Andy White, Lee was a refreshing change and a leading light in all good things for Notts.

The media savvy marksman did all he could to aid the cause, even helping out superbly at the back at set-pieces.

Some of his thumping goals were memorable and it was a shrewd bit of business by Thompson in the end.

Now a member of the coaching staff, it is uncertain whether Lee will be as active next season, but after 40 plus appearances and nearly a goal every other game, Notts fans will be hoping he can once again have a starring role.

Let us all hope referees start to be more lenient!
